What is ADD/ADHD?
Attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) affect more than 5 million people in the U.S. It is characterized by inattentiveness and impulsiveness, and can lead to substantial problems at school, home and work. The condition can also have an extremely negative impact on relationships.
Symptoms of ADD/ADHD
Symptoms of ADD/ADHD start in childhood and may continue as the patient moves to adulthood. If a child exhibits any of the following, he or she may be a candidate for our ADD/ADHD services:
- A tendency to make careless mistakes or difficulty paying attention to details, often producing slipshod work as a result.
- Frequently stopping work to investigate noises or events that others typically ignore.
- Forgetting to bring lunch or showing forgetfulness when it comes to other routine, daily activities.
Causes of ADD/ADHD
Even tough the exact cause of the condition has not been fully determined, experts agree that genetics play a significant role in contributing to the development of ADD/ADHD. In addition, they believe that those who need ADD/ADHD services tend to have different genes that control neurotransmitters, chemicals in the brain that affect several functions, including mood, learning and attention. Babies born with a low birth weight or children who have experienced head injuries may be at a higher risk for developing ADD/ADHD.
